Mid-year 2021, AvenueOne experienced hockey stick growth, resulting in many more hires, new teams, new initiatives, and the need to adopt a myriad of both 3rd party SaaS and AWS technologies to meet market needs.
The technology stack was highly integrated with third-party vendor systems, contractor systems, and property management firms. This complex challenge necessitated key architectural considerations, including reliability, performance efficiency, and security.
AvenueOne operated in a single AWS account at that time.
To support these scaling challenges, AvenueOne needed to align AWS accounts to team topologies, streamline access to the cloud, prepare infrastructure for compliance, adopt new Infrastructure as Code standards, foster robust and efficient DevX practices, and stabilize the release process to increase frequency and efficiency through DevOps practices and methodologies.

AvenueOne chose FIRSTBLOX to work initially in their integration department. Chosen given our advocacy and experience working heavily with IaC, cloud foundations, Serverless architectures and applying DevOps methodologies on the AWS cloud.
The Solution
Collaborate to design a secure, multi-account AWS foundation in alignment with business teams and AWS best practices on cloud foundations.
Recommend the adoption of a new IaC framework to standardize both development delivery practices.
Plan a migration from a single account to a multi-account setup.
Enhance Serverless architectures in alignment with the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
Develop Amazon Six-Pager to communicate overall landscape and strategic plans clearly to business stakeholders.
Design and build CICD pipelines to streamline, stabilize and increase the frequency of deployments.
Hold workshops to educate and train team members on new practices and standards.
Facilitate a new guild to harmonize knowledge, practices, procedures and tools across teams and departments.
Set up operational practices to ensure teams can self-operate with the products they build.
Technical Results:
Successfully migrated the integrations platform from a single AWS account to a multi-account setup in alignment with best practices for cloud foundations.
Successfully adopted an enhanced Serverless architecture to reduce operational costs and align technology stack to handle spiky and unpredictable traffic patterns.
Implemented 95% Infrastructure as Code (IaC) coverage to reduce manual work, enhance auditability and traceability of changes and ensure greater consistency from dev to prod.
Advocated using ephemeral developer sandboxes with IaC standards to improve DevX, testing, delivery speeds and overall developer happiness.
Automated deployments, stabilized integration releases and increased overall release frequency.
Implemented a circuit-breaking pattern with automatic replay of events to enhance operational resiliency.
Collaborated with development teams to develop operational alarms, alerts and notifications integrated via IaC.
Maintained documentation for streamlined development team onboarding.
The Outcome
AvenueOne built upon the successful characteristics of the work delivered by FIRSTBLOX to eventually adopt a Serverless-first strategy in other areas of the business. Serverless technologies replaced non-AWS technology choices where possible, supported by Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and well-architected standards. The maintenance and promotion of multi-account structures became standard practice.
To continue to advocate and support the Serverless-first strategy and streamlined DevOps/Devx FIRSTBLOX initiated the formation of a DevX team which eventually integrated with the broader platform infrastructure team.
The company's development teams continue to leverage serverless technologies, IaC, delivery pipelines, and ephemeral sandboxes to deliver value to their customers.
The platform infrastructure team, which continued to build upon those initial migration foundations to pursue a SOC2 compliance program of work successfully.
